Miah’s melodramatic death overshadows a tale as rich in social and personal insight as any of Woodson’s previous books. The parting thought that, willy-nilly, time moves on will be a colder comfort for stunned readers than it evidently is for Ellie. ![]() Suddenly Miah, forgetting his father’s warning never to be seen running in a white neighborhood, exuberantly dashes into a park and is shot down by police. In quiet conversations and encounters, Woodson perceptively explores varieties of love, trust, and friendship, as she develops well-articulated histories for both families. Not only sharply sensitive to the reactions of those around them, Ellie and Miah also discover depths and complexities in their own intense feelings that connect clearly to their experiences, their social environment, and their own characters. From there, we’re off to the races, as they say, and Thor chases a god-killer across time and space. The basic setup for the story - that some being has been slaying gods for millennia - happens in the first issue, and the mystery elements had me hooked from the very beginning. Plus, the title just sounds badass - this is something I’d been wanting to read for a really long time.Īnd I have to say, it doesn’t disappoint. The book begins with the God Butcher story (issues #1-5), which I’d heard nothing but good things about. ![]() I’m sure I don’t have to spell this out, but just in case you have no idea how the math works out on this, it looks like: 5+1+5+1+5+1=18.Īnyway, I’m not here for basic math I’m here for epic tales of gods and war - and there are plenty of those here. That’s why 18 issues was the exact right number for this collection - you’ve got five issues, plus the single issue spacer afterward, and this pattern is repeated three times. The story is very neatly divided up into five-issue arcs, with a single issue between each one. ![]() ![]() ![]() Christian Hawkins, had kicked more ass and taken more names than most men alive. The second book, The Secret Commonwealth, was published on 3 October 2019 and is set after the events in the original trilogy with Lyra as a twenty-year-old undergraduate. It introduces the research by academics and other free-thinkers into Dust, a mysterious subatomic particle related to consciousness, and the origins of Lyra's alethiometer. It describes how the 11-year-old Malcolm Polstead and the 15-year-old Alice protect the infant Lyra leading to her being in the care of Jordan College. ![]() The first book, La Belle Sauvage, was published in October 2017, and is set 12 years before Northern Lights. I have only read one of her novels, The Girl in Cabin 10, but that one didn’t strike a chord as much as The Turn of the Key did which is mostly attributed to the latter’s writing style which is characterized by an infusion of Gothic elements and slow-building suspense. ![]() I have been an avid fan of mystery/thriller novels, and Ruth Ware is no stranger to the genre.
